DIY napkin rings

On Christmas eve my mom came into the kitchen and announced that she needed napkin rings for Christmas dinner. She had 12 she COULD use but she didn’t really like them AND she would still be, potentially, short two. We spent the next 30 minutes digging through stuff in her sewing room trying to find a way to freshen up the napkin rings. Everything we tried just wasn’t cutting it. Finally we gave up and headed to Michael’s to check out all the Christmas stuff that was all ready marked down.

We went up and down the aisles for awhile and finally settled on something cheap and easy. <insert cheap and easy jokes here> Armed with a $3 spool of wired ribbon we headed home with a plan.

Here is what you need to get started:

  • Wired ribbon (you can pick the width)
  • Scissors
  • Glue dots
  • Napkins

To start, cut you ribbon into 15″ pieces. We folded our napkins in thirds and this length worked for us. If you are folding your napkins in half you will need to adjust for that.

Take each piece of ribbon and tie a loose knot in the middle. The wire in the ribbon will help it stay in place, so don’t feel like you have to tie a tight knot.

Place the ribbon on top of your folded napkin and fold it to the back at each side of the napkin.

Hold the ribbon in place, flip the napkin over. Place two glue dots at the edge of one side of the ribbon, then press the other side of the ribbon down on top of it.

Ta-da!

Since the napkin ring isn’t too tight you can slide it up or down once it is complete. So no worries if it gets moved around when you flip over the napkin to glue the sides together. The main thing is to make sure that the ribbon is folded in the right place on each side.

One of the best parts about this project is that if some of them get messed up you can just toss them afterwards. We were able to make 14 napkin rings from our $3 spool of ribbon so we had no problem with them ended up in the trash at the end of the night. BUT, the glue dots will hold those suckers together for awhile. So if you want to save them to use again next year/time, they will be totally usable.  We did these for Christmas with Christmas ribbon, but you could do these for any occasion with the right ribbon. Simple and easy!
